D&D One-Shot Days Coming from Wizards of the Coast

Dungeons & Dragons has just hit a major milestone, celebrating its 50th year and seeing the release of both a brand new Player’s Handbook and new Dungeon Master’s Guide. To help hype up the new rules and ring in the golden anniversary of the game, Wizards of the Coast recently announced an ongoing series of fan events they’re calling D&D One-Shot Days.

Running from November to December 2024, the events will take place at local game stores and involve one-shots taken from three existing DnD 5e books while also using the new 2024 rules. Below, we break out all the details.

What are D&D One-Shot Days?

D&D One-Shot Days is an ongoing series of gaming events running from November 4th to December 31st 2024 and taking place at local game stores who have opted into the Wizards Play Network (WPN). Fans can participate in low-level adventures taken from the existing anthologies Candlekeep Mysteries, Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel and Keys from the Golden Vault. Each adventure is designed to be run in a single session and players can use pre-made characters or bring their own.

Local game stores can run as many one shots as they like during the event period, with stores encouraged to use the Wizards Eventlink system to track involvement. During the event Players can also sign in to sessions using their Wizards account (although notably it is not a part of the ongoing Adventurer’s League series of organized play adventures).

As part of D&D One-Shot Days, Wizards of the Coast will also be providing each participating game store with 10 codes redeemable on D&D Beyond for a Dracolich Dice Set, which they can reward to players as they see fit. WPN Premium locations will also receive 20 codes. Notably, users will need to have a D&D Beyond account to access the codes, although they don’t need to be a subscriber and can use the free version.

What adventures are being run in D&D One-Shot Days

For D&D One-Shot Days events, stores will be provided with the following three quests, all of which are designed for level 1 characters and are taken from existing DnD 5e publications:

• Joy of Extradimensional Spaces: Appearing in the Candlekeep Mysteries anthology, in this one-shot players must journey to a sprawling magical mansion hidden inside a pocket dimension in order to track down a missing sage.
• Salted Legacy: Taken from Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel, the adventure occurs in the Thai-inspired Dyn Singh Night Market, with players tasked with unmasking a thief to prevent a war between two merchant families.
• Prisoner 13: First published in Keys from the Golden Vault, the adventure has players heading to the infamous Revel’s End prison to find a mysterious prisoner who knows the location of ancient treasure horde.

Final thoughts

DnD one shots are a fantastic way to experience everything the game has to offer, so it’s great to see that Wizards of the Coast is sponsoring events like this to connect with new and experienced players. It would, however, have been great to see unique adventures on hand that are designed specifically to showcase the new DnD 2024 core books. It would have also been nice to include more than just a handful of digital dice as swag. That being said, it still sounds like something that could be a lot of fun and a great way to bring in new players and support local game stores.
